The Department of Film & Media Arts at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor to begin August 2020. We seek a colleague with expertise in screenwriting to teach foundational writing courses in addition to electives related to writing for a range of contemporary media. The candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of both the theory and the craft of writing for the screen, and be able to develop new writing courses that will serve students across the breadth of our programs in filmmaking, animation, and media arts production. Our ideal candidate’s work will reflect the range of creative possibilities attendant to the proliferation of screens and platforms that characterizes 21st century moving image art .

Required Qualifications

•M .F. A. or other terminal degree in film, television, media arts, or a related field

•Evidence of successful post-secondary level teaching

•Ability to develop and teach courses related to writing for a range of digital and new media forms at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curricula

•A record of creative work, evidence of which may include produced credits, screenwriting contest successes, and significant festival screenings

•Interest in and evidence of potential for securing external grants and funding

Candidates requesting consideration at the rank of Associate Professor will also have

•Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level

•Experience in academic administration and curriculum development

•A body of creative work that represents a significant contribution to the field of screenwriting

The Department of Film & Media Arts is the largest unit in the University of Utah’s College of Fine Arts, enrolling over 600 undergraduate majors in film, animation, and media arts production, along with 30 graduate students. Students study creative and technical production, history, criticism, and theory, and have the freedom to tailor the degrees across multiple areas of interest including documentary, narrative and experimental filmmaking, animation, screenwriting, cinematography, critical studies, and new media.
