Chapman University and Dodge College of Film and Media Arts seek applications for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position in Production Design in its nationally recognized Dodge College of Film and Media Arts beginning August 2020.

Instructor of Production Design includes both teaching and administrative duties. Teaching requirements are consistent with full-time faculty duties, i.e. the teaching load is 18 to 21 credits per academic year, in addition to continued professional work and/or research and scholarship. Administrative duties include designing, regularly reviewing, and updating curriculum for both undergraduate and graduate programs; advising on faculty hiring; program development; service to the school and university.
The successful candidate will have extensive industry experience and credentials in the field of art direction, set design, and/or production design, having held key creative positions on multiple film projects. Desirable skills include exceptional art and aesthetic credentials, professional experience creating and supervising art departments, an advanced proficiency of technologies and computer design programs related to production design, expertise in previsualization techniques of sketching and model making, and strong communication skills. It is preferred but not required that the successful candidate have a university degree and some teaching experience. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching first as well as to continuing his or her own professional work.
The undergraduate curriculum of the Production Design Program will include fundamental art, history, computer aided design technology, and production courses to prepare students for the role of designer in the modern film or television art department, potentially serving live action, visual effects, gaming, or computer-animated productions.
The Undergraduate and Graduate curriculum will assume an advanced level of ability of the students and focus on hands-on production. The primary responsibility of the instructor will be to teach graduate and undergraduate production design classes, oversee the work of production design students on undergraduate thesis projects, and advising students on the design of the narrative projects produced at Dodge College.

The BFA production design is an emphasis of the undergraduate film production program of Dodge College. The MFA program in production design functions in concert with the graduate film production program. The instructor will be one of two full time faculty members in production design. Six additional part time instructors specialize in teaching: costume design, set décor, illustration, storyboarding, digital design, visual effects, and animation. Dodge College has five sound stages, a fully functional scenic shop, and a property warehouse.
