Lasell University invites applications for School Dean of the School of Communication & the Arts, one of five schools at the institution.
The School Dean is a full-time faculty member responsible for strategic and operational functions of a school, which is comprised of multiple academic programs. Deans hire, supervise, and evaluate all faculty within the school, as well as one or more discipline-based Program Chairs, collaborating with Program Chairs to determine specifics of how responsibilities are assigned within each school. A principal responsibility of the Dean is to improve the quality of the educational experience by facilitating curricular development, leading recruitment and retention efforts, cultivating potential donors, and building partnerships with external organizations. The Dean also collaborates across schools and areas of the University in the interests of interdisciplinary programming as well as institutional creativity and growth. The Dean exercises leadership in strategic planning for the School and in collaboration with the Deans of the other schools.
The School Dean teaches two courses in each 12-month period and maintains disciplinary expertise through appropriate professional development.
In addition, the School Dean's salary includes an annual stipend. The Dean's direct reports include one or more discipline-based Program Chairs, full-time faculty members, an administrative assistant and adjunct faculty members.
The School Dean is appointed by and reports to the Provost. This is a 12-month administrative assignment. The Dean holds rank and returns to the full-time faculty after having served in this role.
- Proven record of leadership, outstanding interpersonal skills, and the ability to support the wide range of communication and arts disciplines within the School
- Clear understanding of current and future trends in communication, digital media and design
- Commitment to faculty excellence in teaching and ability to support both the theoretical and applied professional achievement necessary for meaningful careers
- Able to successfully engage academic, creative and professionally based enterprises of the School and foster synergies to drive innovation and growth
- Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a manner that reflects an appreciation for and commitment to a diverse workplace and student body
- Either academic qualifications (earned terminal degree, and an extensive record of scholarship broadly defined) or record of outstanding professional activity and experience in the field of communications, coupled with the ability to fulfill the leadership and administrative expectations of the position.
