In the Spotlight today is the 14th Annual Harlem International Film Festival(Hi), offering an inspiring and eclectic showcase in one of New York City's most vibrant neighborhoods. The Festival is known for showcasing fine feature films, documentaries, shorts, animation, youth projects, VR, experimental, music videos, and webisodes from around the world. Screenwriters are invited to submit short or feature screenplays of any genre for competition.

TheHiexperience submerges filmmakers and festival attendees in four days of film, food, fashion, and fun. For over a decade the Festival has focused on the strength of its curated work, presenting the most memorable cinema from Harlem to Hong Kong. Coupled with the unique energy that accompanies it, the Festival evokes and remains true to the glory of this world-renowned cultural capital located in Manhattan at the heart of New York City. The Festival accepts films of all genres and themes, but this season it is putting additional programming focus on these subjects: earth/environment, health, education, gender equality, racism/fascism, immigration, gentrification/colonization, war, LGBTQA, technology, addiction, and gun violence.

Harlem International has proven to discover the best in upcoming talent including award-winning director, Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time,Selma) who screened her directorial debut at the Festival back in 2006. Director Nate Parker first screened at Harlem International in 2010 and in 2016 broke records selling his filmBirth Of A Nationfor $17.5 million.HiAlum James Marquand (Dead Man's Cards,Beautiful Devils) said, "We instinctively felt it was the right place for our film and were thrilled to know that [Harlem International] did too. It was great to be made so welcome in Harlem by everyone we met, and to have our eyes opened to a neighborhood with both a rich and vibrant history and a hugely promising future. It was very hard to leave, I am sure we will all be back."

Celebrating the art of film in the home of the Harlem Renaissance, Harlem International Film Festival inspires and entertains by honoring films and screenplays that offer honest, exciting and thought-provoking portrayals of our world.

MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Other than awards for Directors, Actors, Narratives, Shorts, Animation, Music Video, Webisode, Experimental and Screenplay finalists, the Festival also offers the prized Mira Nair Award for Rising Female Filmmaker and the Harlem Spotlight Award for the best films produced in or about Harlem or by a key Harlem crew/cast member The New York Showcase similarly shines light on work produced in the greater New York area. Since its inception, the Festival has showcased over 1000 films and bestowed over 400 awards.
