In the Spotlight today is the 30th New Orleans Film Festival(NOFF), celebrating cinema like only New Orleans can, with brass bands, second-line parades, gumbo, and Mardi Gras beads for every filmmaker. New Orleans is known to the world over for its hospitality and of course for throwing a great party. NOFF is no exception—but the festival never loses sight of what it’s celebrating: exciting new work from diverse filmmakers telling the stories of our time.

Celebrating its 30th year, the New Orleans Film Festival has grown into an internationally respected annual event. NOFF is Oscar-qualifying in all three Academy-accredited categories: Narrative Short, Documentary Short, and Animated Short. The Fest has been recognized byMovieMaker Magazineas one of the “Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” every year since 2012. More than 90% of the lineup comes directly from submissions and select filmmakers take home cash awards like $20,000 USD to the winner of a pitch competition in collaboration with the Tribeca Film Institute.

Paste Magazinehas praised the festival for offering “a platform to voices that still fight to be heard,” and indeed, last year’s festival saw 54% of its films helmed by directors of color and 60% from female and gender non-confirming directors. Some of the festival’s special programming in recent years has included a live recording for Slate’s “Represent” podcast; a virtual reality showcase featuring new 360° work; new films from the Caribbean and Caribbean diaspora; a documentary sidebar celebrating change-makers advancing causes of marginalized communities; filmmaker roundtables for peer-to-peer sharing; and mentorship opportunities for filmmakers. For the past several years, the festival has played host to around 400 filmmakers who come to show their work and lend their artistic voice to the festival.
