In the Spotlight today is the 4th Annual Defy Film Festival, focusing on great films regardless of genre. The Festival showcases great work made outside the typical entertainment machine whether you're a first time filmmaker or a seasoned storyteller. Defy Film Festival's name says it all - filmmakers that defy conventions, expectations, storytelling, genre, technology, and the medium are encouraged to submit to Defy.

Filmmaker Stephen Elliot had this to share after premiering his film, "I didn't know what to expect but I was stunned by it. It was such a fantastic event and great community. I would return in a heartbeat." Elliot's film,After Adderall, has since shown at both Raindance and Slamdance Film Festivals. Filmmaker Ben Kaplan (Living Like Kings) adds, "Honestly there's something about East Nashville that felt like that was a place that was going to get what I was trying to do. That the community of people the community of makers in this town or in this part of the city would get that more than somewhere else." Between lively Q&As and parties each night, Defy is an unforgettable experience where filmmakers, cinephiles, and fans celebrate.

With just two categories open - Features and Shorts - Defy is open to anything and everything from filmmakers. No matter what kind of film you have, Defy wants to see it - drama, comedy, experimental, animation, documentaries, horror/sci-fi, music videos, and more. Founded by independent filmmakers, the Festival respects the financial and artistic investments made to create films and is eager to provide unrecognized filmmakers a new platform to promote their work.

Defy is focused on great work. Work made outside of the system. Work that had to defy all conventions to be made. Filmmakers that defy expectations.

Defy Film Festival encourages filmmakers to tell the story that drove and inspired them to make their film in the cover letter. The spark, the seed, the moment that started them down the difficult path towards their vision. A film should stand on its own, but sometimes the intent of the filmmaker and why they made the choices they did will add an extra layer of understanding and a deeper experience for the audience.

Submit your film to Defy Film Festival today to join a tribe of distinctive storytellers in Nashville this summer!
